18/8 and 18/10 stainless flatware explained
What does 18/10 stainless mean?
The 18/10 combination is the highest quality alloy (metal mixture) available for making stainless steel flatware. 18/10 stainless has 18% chrome for maximum corrosion resistance and 10% nickel for a silver-like luster. Nickel is the more rare and expensive metal. Chrome is what is mixed with steel to make it stainless steel.
18/8 and 18/10 refer to the percentages of chromium and nickel in the stainless steel alloy. The "18" refers to the chromium content, which gives flatware its strength, and the "8" or "10" refers to the nickel content, which gives it its shine and rust-resistance.
These numbers are merely "nicknames" for the lay person to use, and are only used for marketing efforts by flatware manufacturers. When a manufacturer purchases stainless steel from a steel mill, they all purchase stainless steel Grade 304, which has a range of 18-20% chromium, and 8-10% nickel content. Grade 304 in flatware is usually at the lower end of that range. To keep the cost down, steel manufacturers will make grade 304 with 8.2% nickel, which clears the legal hurdle of calling it 18/10.
What does all this mean? It means that there is no difference between 18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel in flatware. The difference between the two is purely a marketing effort.
FAQ
Why do stains occur on some stainless?
Stainless steel is not stain proof. Ingredients found in tea, coffee, salad dressing, vinegar and salt can cause discoloration. Pitting or spotting is usually caused by hard water or foods with high salt content.

How do I remove stains?
A high-quality, stainless cleaner will remove stains caused from minerals on your stainless steel flatware. Drying your flatware with a soft towel as you put it back in your drawers is an excellent way to prevent mineral or stain buildup.
Why do my blackened handle stainless rust over time when I let them sit even after wiping dry?
The blackening process is a natural process not a paint or chemical color. It is achieved by heating the oiled surface of the raw stainless steel twice to embed the blackening into the surface. This process also breaks the protective polished surface and exposes it to rusting the steel component of stainless steel. During daily use you may never notice any rusting. If you use the flatware and then store it for short periods of time then you need to either wipe the handles with olive or another vegetable oil or a natural wax on the blackened portions.
ENJOY your stainless steel flatware. It can be used every day, and is virtually maintenance-free. Quality stainless has 18% chrome and 8 to 10% nickel added to the steel, resulting in a durable, corrosion-resistant product that will literally 'stain less'.

Rinse your stainless after exposing it to acid or chloride-containing foods (e.g. salt, vinegar, oil, mustard, lemon, some dairy products).
Feel comfortable cleaning your flatware in the dishwasher. Do use a tested brand of detergent (such as Calgonite, All, or Cascade), in somewhat less than the manufacturer's recommended amount. Do ensure that the dry cycle immediately follows the wash cycle, then promptly remove your flatware from the humid dishwasher.
Wipe your stainless dry after hand or machine washing to prevent water spots, as well as build-up of minerals that can be deposited by hard city water. To keep your flatware looking its brightest, manufacturers recommend polishing it once or twice a year with stainless steel cleaner (not silver polish).
Take extra care with stainless steel knives, especially in patterns where the blade and handle are manufactured as one piece. Knives can be more susceptible to corrosion than the rest of your flatware, because their steel blades have a small amount of carbon added for a keen and lasting cutting edge. Place knives together in the dishwasher, with handles down, to prevent them from hitting one another during the cycle. Wipe your knives dry immediately after washing. Hand wash single-piece knives for best results.
Rotate your flatware so that each piece receives a similar frequency of use. This will ensure that the various pieces in your set maintain a consistent appearance over time

Finish

FINISHES : Highly water resistant and food safe finish. These natural oils are translucent so the wood grain detail is highlighted. No oily feel and cannot ?bleed? into carpets as it contains natural lacs. Natural lacs rise to the surface after the oil soaks into the wood and dry to create a hard surface that can be polished sealing the surface.

Livos is the brand from Germany and produces natural oils from plant chemistry (no manmade chemicals or additives) All finish oils are Livos except as noted.

WALNUT OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic Walnut tone oil that is polished to a matte finish. Color ranges from medium to dark Walnut brown tones that will darken as the wood ages. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

CHERRY INTENSIVE OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic Cherry Intensive tone oil that is polished to a matte finish. Color ranges from medium to dark reddish brown cherry wood tones that will darken as the wood ages. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

DARK WALNUT OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic Dark Walnut tone oil that is polished to a matte finish. Color ranges from dark Walnut brown to black Walnut tones that will darken as the wood ages. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

WHITE OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic White tone oil that is polished to a matte finish the oil makes the wood turn to a marbleized stone look finish. The light portions of wood turn to shades of beige and the dark wood lightens to shades of brown with a light transparent white top coat. This is then polished to a matte finish. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish. People think it is fossilized stone at first.

AGATE GREY OIL ?Antiqued White finish?

Agate Grey - The oil makes the wood turn to an antique white look with a light grey patina finish. The light portions of wood turn to shades of beige, and the dark wood lightens to shades of brown with a light transparent White top coat over the Grey antique looking undercoat finish. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

MOCHA OIL

To make the Mocha look we coat first with Livos Chestnut Oil which is a rich brown with red tones and then a top coat of Black oil. Since the oils are transparent the first coat of Chestnut oil allows the browns to show through but gives it a richer brown with red tones. The Black oil then gives it that mocha look. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

OAK OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic Oak (golden) tone decking oil. Color ranges from medium to dark Golden Oak and brown tones that will darken as the wood ages. This is then finished with a clear Universal Wood oil overlay to provide a matte finish and then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

WHITE OAK OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic White Oak tone oil. Color ranges from light to medium white beige Oak and brown tones that will darken as the wood ages. This is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

ANTIQUE OAK OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic Antique Oak tone oil giving an aged oak wood look. Color ranges from medium to dark Oak and brown tones that will darken as the wood ages. It is then finished with a natural clear wax overlay to provide a protective finish.

TUNG OIL

Hand rubbed in natural non toxic Tung oil that is polished to a matte finish. Highly water resistant and food safe finish.

The light and dark portions of wood turn to darker shades of brown over time and the alkaline in the oils create a honey orange color. This is then polished to a matte finish. These natural oils are translucent so the wood grain detail is highlighted. No oily feel and cannot ?bleed? into carpets.

Has a mild nutty smell that will fade over time as it is undiluted oil pressed from the Tung tree nuts.

Disclaimer

Natural exotic wood products have variations in texture and finish color. This is due to the underlying natural wood tones, viewable through the translucent oil.

There will be visible marks from carving, patches from repairs, knot holes, natural inclusions, and worm holes.

There will be various separations or cracks on your piece when it arrives. These naturally occurred as the wood was dried. Over time, some continued shrinkage may accentuate existing separations or generate new ones. This does not compromise the structural performance or integrity of the wood and is considered inherent to the natural beauty of the design.

Products are natural and handmade. Sizes are just an approximation. Products are not perfectly square or flat, but are useable and reasonably flat.

We use the same wood to fill in worm holes and larger separations but we do not fill in or repair carving marks, or natural inclusions like knots and branch growths. We sand to blend them to smooth edges and surfaces that are useable.

Wood from a tropical climate is still alive. It will change over time based on a new climate, and if you place the piece in direct sunlight, or by a heating or cooling source, small cracks will appear but will stop occurring over time.

The color will vary from the pictures depicted for every piece. The oil is the same color tone but the underlying wood color of the piece it is going on varies.

In all of these tropical woods, mold blooms that create dark stains are natural.

Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning is best accomplished by using warm lightly soapy water. Use of a dishwashing soap with a citrus base is best. Simply wipe the item with a wetted damp rag and then wipe dry with an absorbent dry towel. To maintain luster use a spray on furniture polish like Lemon Pledge.

Direct exposure in the sun light will cause the oil to fade due to UV rays. Over time the oiled surface can be refreshed by cleaning and then applying a light coat of neutral natural wood oil.

Livos oils are from natural plant chemistry and are water resistant and food safe surfaces.

Note: Natural wood with natural finishes packed in cardboard boxes may develop surface mold due to air moisture and contact between cardboard and wood. The wood is a natural heat sink and warms and cools creating moisture inside the box. The wet cardboard causes surface mold to form occasionally.

After removing from the cartons simply clean as above. The piece will adjust to its new climate and stabilize over time and the surface mold will stop forming.

The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.
